Summary of Duties:

The Journalist/News Fellow - Investigate West position is a two-year fixed term appointment serving as a civic news reporter in the Murrow News Fellowship Program. This position is for an emerging journalist to report on civic affairs in underserved communities.

As the Journalist/News Fellow - Investigate West employee you work as a collaborative investigative reporter, producing high-impact stories with and for under-resourced newsrooms across Washington state. You work to expose wrongdoing, corruption, exploitation, the holes in society's safety nets and the powerful interests responsible for fixing them. Your output could be in various formats, though primarily in writing or for digital presentations. The assigned newsroom will provide editing, guidance and professional support in collaboration with Murrow's Program Manager.

Investigate West is a virtual newsroom. You work remotely in the State of Washington. Most of your work will be done via email and phone, but on occasion, depending on the news, you will travel as needed, dependent on where the news is located - generally day trips, no overnights.

Required Qualifications:

  • Positions require a Bachelor's Degree in a field relevant to area of specialization. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the degree requirement
  • Combination of relevant education and experience relevant to the beat and the role.
  • Experience with audio and/or podcasting.
  • Strong news reporting skills to produce quality journalism.
  • Ability to create engaging stories that audiences will find unique.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver's license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards.




Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree from any accredited higher ed institution Washington state with a major in journalism, broadcasting, communications, or closely related field.
  • Knowledge of Washington state community issues.
  • Experience or training in new technologies for the gathering and delivery of news.
  • Experience in producing video, for online or broadcast.
  • Experience using social media in a news environment.
  • Experience researching complex issues.
  • Experience with data reporting and public records.
  • Fluency in a foreign language.

Monthly Salary:
$4,583.33 | In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
