Job Description

Our team ensures patients receive the high-quality, personalized care they need to overcome mental health and behavioral challenges. We offer a range of settings including inpatient psychiatric hospitals, residential treatment centers, and outpatient counseling and therapies. We currently seeking experienced Certified Medical Assistants (CMAs) for our behavioral health hospital in Garland, TX.  

This Position has a basic working knowledge of all unit functions and will perform clerical duties and provide administrative, secretarial, and nursing support to one or more nursing units. Unit secretarial work involves standard administrative responsibilities, such as answering phones and directing calls, making copies, and replenishing unit supplies and inventories. Responsibility also includes phlebotomy services when appropriately trained to work in a high acuity psychiatric hospital setting.

Phlebotomy
  • Venipuncture: prepares daily patient lab requisitions; assemble necessary equipment, label and bag all tubes with patient name, date and time collected, and initials of person performing venipuncture; take blood samples; and clean the work area with a disinfectant.
  • Demonstrate proper use and cleaning of the laboratory centrifuge.
  • Updates lab log and Reports Critical Lab results as per policy.
Chart Audits
  • Reviews assigned charts daily for incomplete histories and documentation and bring these to the attention of the appropriate member of the health care team for correction.
  • Updates Master Treatment Plans and Medical Problem Sheets following patient incidents as required.
  • Daily review and report of Diabetic Monitoring.
Diagnostics
  • Generate diagnostic requisitions and obtain Lab and X-ray reports and notify doctors, charge nurse and/or House Supervisor of results.
  • Reports Critical results immediately and documents in accordance with policies and procedures.
Routine
  • Maintains tracker of reportable incidents and ensures compliance with documentation requirements.
  • Reviews and updates ObservSmart Precautions and Observations daily.
  • Reviews and updates the whiteboard (patient information) daily throughout the shift.
  • Conducts daily medication room inspections.
  • Adheres to Infection Control Procedures Assures cleanliness and orderliness of the assigned work area/unit.
  • Communicate and collaborate with the medical, clinical, and administrative staff to ensure all appropriate patient information.
  • Make photocopies and faxes documents.
  • Contributes to the effective implementation of individual treatment plans of clients through supervision, positive interaction and role modeling, appropriate scoring of observed behaviors, and appropriate consequences or limit setting based on behaviors and program definition.  
  • Ensures compliance with all company policies and procedures and regulatory requirements, reporting any known or suspected violations to his/her supervisor or through other means identified in company policy. 
  • prioritizing safety concerns, following proper restraint technique guidelines, and displaying neutral emotions.
  • Uses appropriate therapeutic skills by de-escalating aggression, using active listening skills, using appropriate tone and volume of voice, providing a high frequency and variety of positive reinforcements, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and promoting a positive peer culture.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of all patient records.
Secondary:
  • Vital Signs Assessment; documentation in accordance with policy and procedures.
  • Blood Glucose Monitoring as delegated.
  • Transcribes doctors’ orders per hospital policy, as applicable.
  • Assists with receiving, distributing, and sorting supplies brought to the unit.
  • Assists the charge nurse with the admission and discharge process when delegated by the Supervisor.
  • Assists with obtaining psychotropic medication consents.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed by Chief Nursing Officer and/or House Supervisor.
Qualifications:  Training, and Experience Required :
  • Certification in a medical assistant program. High School Diploma and/or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience: Preferably a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in hospital business office and/or human resources, preferably in a health care setting; or any combination of education, training or experience in a hospital business office.
  • Current CPR and BLS certification required
Additional Requirements: Successful completion of training in Handle with Care or Crisis Prevention Intervention training within 30 days of employment, and prior to assisting in restraining procedures.
