Job Description

Physician

Student & Campus Life (SCL) inspires transformation in all Cornell students on their journey of individual, academic and personal evolution. Our division is comprised of leading student affairs experts who support our campus on pressing student life matters including public service, health, wellness, social justice, residential living, food services, sports, recreation, career services, and student activities and organizations including sorority and fraternity life. Our nearly 4,000 staff and student employees who make up SCL embrace the opportunity to represent the division and strive for excellence as we shape the Cornell student experience, one interaction at a time.

Cornell Health is a fully accredited ambulatory care center with more than 200 employees, committed to providing integrated and culturally sensitive medical, mental health, health promotion and public health services for the diverse Cornell community. Cornell Health is nationally recognized for innovation and leadership in the development of integrated, cost-effective, and community-based services and campus health initiatives.

Cornell Health's Medical Department aims to provide collaborative, innovative, vibrant, holistic clinical care for patients' biopsychosocial needs. We offer services with a multi-disciplinary team of professionals, encouraging each team member to utilize their professional skills and personal compassion to care for an individual's needs. We aspire to provide care as a Patient Centered Medical Home, a model of primary care tailored to the urgent and long-term needs of each person. We care for any person with any problem and welcome all members of our diverse community to our team and services. Cornell Health, by organizational necessity, requires collaborative and attitudinal skills that foster enthusiasm, professional and personal growth, cooperation, mutually respectful communication, flexibility, initiative and adaptability.

Physicians at Cornell Health provide direct ambulatory primary patient care to students of the university. Each physician has responsibility to provide or arrange for comprehensive care for a patient's holistic needs - including their medical, mental health, emotional and social issues. All physicians collaborate with community and other Cornell Health physician colleagues, health associates, nursing staff, ancillary and support staff, professional psychotherapist staff, physical therapists and health educators to provide comprehensive care to students as patients. In their clinical work with students, physicians are involved with the developmental, educational, emotional, psychological, social and academic aspects of students' lives, and often are called upon to interact with parents, faculty and other professionals, both on and off campus in a patient-centered medical home model of primary care delivery.

Success Factors

  • A positive contributor to a team-based, inter-professional environment with an innovative, collaborative, improvement-oriented culture
  • Works independently, yet collaboratively, in managing their caseload
  • Regularly handles sensitive and confidential information
  • Keeps current on best practices for providing health care to a campus community, in a primary care model within a biopsychosocial framework
  • Fosters strong working relationships with all Cornell Health staff

This position is a full-time, 18-month fixed-term position. Extension of the term appointment is contingent upon funding, successful performance, and business need. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

The review of applications will begin on January 6, 2025. Applications submitted after this date may still be considered until the position is filled.

Required Qualifications:

  • M.D. or D.O. with current NYS license, BC/BE in a primary care or other appropriate specialty.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with knowledge and sensitivities appropriate to working with a highly diverse, young adult population.
  • CPR-BLS level certification achieved within one year of employment and maintained biannually, as applicable.
  • Physicians at Cornell Health must be willing to consider prescribing psychotropic medications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest in and concern for health problems encountered in a campus community, including medical and mental health issues and areas where they intersect.
  • Ability to coordinate with colleagues to maintain continuity of patient care and ensure the appropriate management and treatment of medical problems when not physically present at the health center.
  • Desire to communicate electronically with patients.
  • Facility with using an electronic health record to advance the care of patients using non-face-to-face opportunities for patient care.
  • Experience with and desire to work in a team-based environment, working with varied and diverse healthcare staff in a patient centered medical home.

While position responsibilities vary, every member of our community is expected to foster a culture of belonging and a psychologically healthy work environment by communicating across differences; being cooperative, collaborative, open, and welcoming; showing respect, compassion, and empathy; engaging and supporting others regardless of background or perspective; speaking up when others are being excluded or treated inappropriately; and supporting work/life integration of oneself and others.
