Job Summary

The Department of Communication Arts seeks applicants for a non-tenure track Lecturer faculty position for the 2024-2025 Academic Year beginning August 1, 2024, and ending May 12, 2025. The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching courses in the candidate's area of expertise in the Dance program as well as provide service to the department, College and University.

The College of the Arts includes the Department of Art & Design, the Department of Music, and the Department of Communication Arts (Communication, Mass Media, Theatre & Dance, and MAIC). The College of the Arts is also home to the award-winning Valdosta Symphony Orchestra and the Peach State Summer Theatre, designated as the Official Musical Theatre of the State of Georgia. VSU is accredited by NASAD, NASM, and NAST. With ~80 faculty/staff members and approximately 700 students, the College offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Responsibilities

This position will be responsible for teaching 4-5 undergraduate courses per semester (dependent on contact hours) in fall and spring. Courses include:

Teaching 4-5 undergraduate courses per semester (Fall and Spring dependent upon contact hours) and providing service to the department, college and University. Additional responsibilities include creating concert dance choreography and mentoring students in the collaborative rehearsal process. Courses to be taught include:

  • Introduction to Dance (Dance Appreciation)
  • Dance movement courses in at least two areas of proficiency (such as ballet, jazz, contemporary, tap, world dance forms, and/or social dance)

Typical Allocation of Duties

Teaching and Service - 100%
Teaches classes and meets assigned service obligations.

Required Qualifications Master's degree in Dance or closely related field completed by appointment date 8/1/2024

Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and learning

Preferred Qualifications
  • Terminal degree in Dance (MFA in Dance or an appropriately related field and/or extensive experience in professional dance performance/choreography)

  • Qualifications/experience teaching Dance History and Pedagogy

  • A record of effective teaching appropriate to the applicant's career stage

  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative setting

  • A record of mentoring students

Proposed Salary
