Health Education Specialist – Project
Healthy Communities Program
Monthly Salary Range: $5,182.38 - $6,299.22
Contra Costa Health has a temporary opportunity for a Health Education Specialist in our Healthy Communities Program. Under direction, the incumbent will assist with implementation of educational and health promotion activities for the department; assume responsibility for educational aspects of assigned department programs; and perform related work as required.
The Healthy Communities Program works with a variety of partners including elected officials, county staff, city staff, community organizations, schools and residents. Together, we assist cities and neighborhoods to improve health and quality of life for residents by reducing traffic injuries, community violence, and exposure to secondhand smoke and lead. We also provide assistance in promoting physical activity and access to healthy food.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished from that of Senior Health Education Specialist by the more limited scope of program responsibilities; the closer supervision received and the absence of any lead responsibilities.
Incumbents are assigned health education-oriented responsibilities for selected programs under the direction of the Program Administrator. Positions may be located in any of the major operating divisions of the Health Services Department.
Incumbents in this class work in Federal or State funded project positions administered by Contra Costa County and are exempt from the classified service.
Typical Tasks:
· Plan and conduct various aspects of the nutrition education and physical activity promotion program as assigned by the program manager.
· Promote the program in designated ethnically and culturally diverse, low-income communities within Contra Costa County in accordance with the funder’s guidelines.
· Assist with developing, implementing, and evaluating the program’s curricula, training, workshops, and effectiveness.
· Provide technical assistance, support, and training for program subcontractors and partners in their efforts to promote nutrition education and physical activity in an array of settings.
· Develop, prepare, maintain and disseminate nutrition education and physical activity promotion educational materials.
· Confer with and advise program team on health education and preventive principles, techniques of community organizations, best practices for nutrition education and physical activity promotion, and strategies for addressing the social determinants of health and increasing health equity.
· Research best practices for Policy, Systems and Environmental change (PSE) and prepare policy recommendations for strategies that support the goals and objectives of the program and improve the nutrition and physical activity environment.
· Provide training, technical assistance, and support for program partners, subcontractors, local community based and government agencies utilizing PSE strategies to improve the nutrition and physical activity environment in a variety of settings.
· Provide detailed information for and contribute to the development of program scope of activities, reports to the funder, as well as analyzing and summarizing data collected for assessing program needs and evaluation. Present project reports and findings from evaluation activities to partners and community stakeholders.
· Represent the program at local, regional and state sponsored events.
· Represent program goals and objectives in meetings with partners, subcontractors, educational institutions, local government agencies, community based-organizations, other Contra Costa Health Services programs and staff.
· Attend and participate in team and all-staff meetings.
· Attend trainings and workshops as mandated by funder and/or recommended by program manager.
· Other duties as assigned based on programmatic needs.
Administrative Activities:
· Ensure that all project activities are allowable under the guidelines set by the founder that those activities are appropriately documented.
· Enter and maintain data through an electronic tracking system.
· Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to write clearly and concisely, keep detailed records, and the ability to work well independently and as a team member is required.
· Provide detailed information for quarterly, semi-annual, and annual reports to funder.
· File and maintain detailed information received from community members using a filing system in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
· Participate in meetings and conference calls with funders as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications
License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Out-of-state valid motor vehicle operator's license will be accepted during the application process.
Education: Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health, Health Services Administration, Social Work, Health Education, Education, Sports Medicine, Kinesiology, Nutrition, or a closely related field.
Experience: One year of full-time, or its equivalent, which included direct responsibility for performing health promotion, health prevention, or community health education work.
Substitution for Education: Four years of full-time, or its equivalent, experience equivalent to the Community Health Worker II in Contra Costa County and 60 semester units or 90 quarter units of college coursework with at least 12 semester and 18 quarter units in health related coursework may be substituted for the required Bachelor's degree.
