Position Title: Custodian
Department: Building and Grounds
Reports to: Head Custodian/Supervisor of Building and Grounds
Summary
The Custodian maintains building and grounds by providing housekeeping, grounds keeping and custodial services. Serves students and staff by responding to custodial needs and issues throughout the day and evening activities. Maintains the building to expected standards to ensure a safe and functional environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Maintains building interior by cleaning offices, classrooms, and other building areas; dusting and polishing furniture, equipment, mirrors and fixtures; washing windows, and horizontal surfaces; sweeping, scrubbing and washing floors; vacuuming rugs; cleaning, sanitizing and resupplying lavatories, and reports to the Head Custodian any areas or items that might require additional care or maintenance
2. Ensures building accessibility and appearance by eliminating debris, graffiti, litter and trash, and removing ice and snow from walkways
3. Removes trash by emptying trash containers; transporting materials to disposal area; recycling appropriate materials
4. Advises Head Custodian of potential shortages of cleaning supplies
5. Contributes to District-wide team effort by accomplishing related and additional job responsibilities as directed and assigned by Head Custodian or Principal
6. Coordinates with school secretary to assist in general supplies inventory, handling, and distribution
7. Maintains building security by assuring that exterior doors are secured/locked daily as necessary
8. Operates various systems (e.g. fire alarm and lighting), as well as building and cleaning equipment, tractors, mowers, etc.
9. Maintains the building, performing minor painting and repairs, and addresses emergencies on an as-needed basis
10. Monitors the exterior areas around the building, picks up trash and debris as necessary and reports to the Head Custodian regarding any areas or items that might require additional care or maintenance.
11. Assists with the set up or break down of furniture or equipment for evening activities or special events
12. Duties appropriate to the position may be added by the Superintendent or designee

Education and/or Experience
High School diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and experience as a custodian in a school, business, or institutional setting preferred. Training is provided. Transportation to and from the job site is a requirement.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Act 34 – Pennsylvania Criminal History Record Check as amended by Act 24 of 2011, Act 151 – Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Record Check, Act 114 – Federal Criminal History Record Check (FBI finger print check) at the time of employment.

Academic Skills - Ability to follow manufacture’s detailed directions of cleaning processes and equipment guidelines. Ability to read reports, follow schedules, and read and understand safety precautions.
Language Skills – Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language. Possess the ability to use the language in both oral and written form. Be able to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences. Be able to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand. Possess the ability to speak clearly so others can understand.
Math Skills – Knowledge of basic arithmetic and its applications. Possess the ability to use math skills in calculating, estimating and measuring for general purposes.
Technology Skills – Be able to send and receive emails. Be able to use a computer to access information. Be able to utilize software specific to building and maintenance issues.
Reasoning Ability – Ability to problem solve and utilize time and resources properly.
Other Skills and Abilities
The employee must collaborate and cooperate with supervisors and colleagues. Must be able to adapt to change. Able to communicate with students, supervisors, support staff, professional personnel, parents and school visitors. Follow oral and written instructions, function independently, organize work schedule. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Must be able to act calmly and effectively in stressful and/or emergency situations.
Physical Demands
Must be able to travel between school buildings and various external locations when necessary. Possess good work habits, dependability and ability to work without direct supervision.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand or walk for extended periods of time, sit, bend at waist, and carry objects. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, far, and peripheral vision, ability to adjust focus and possess depth perception to be able to judge distance from objects. Must be able to see, hear, and talk in order to see when areas are clean and to read labels. Must be able to climb any size ladder, maintain balance, crawl, access all areas of buildings and athletic facilities, and safely and efficiently move within and around all areas of a construction site. Must be able to bend, push, and lift up to 75 pounds. Must possess dexterity of hand and fingers to operate manual and power equipment.

Work Environment
The work environment will vary from a quiet office environment to potentially very loud situations such as boiler rooms, cafeterias, or large group settings. The employee must be able to work in air-conditioned buildings under florescent lighting and must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions. The employee may be exposed to fumes and various chemicals, and may have to work in high, precarious places.
